First of all before I head off in my direction, I want everyone to know that I am definitely interested in VS 2005 (Whidbey). I really am. I have been reading (with a grain of salt) much of the stuff that is coming out. I'd rather not have the deluge yet, but I really do understand why it's happening (we developers seem to show in droves to see the new features of the next version, so they are giving us our taste now).
The Danger
That said there is a danger here. One that I think bears mentioning. Right now, I'm using some classes built by another developer here at my workplace. I asked this developer if he planned on maybe repackaging this and giving back to the community (they are excellent!)
The response floored me; and now as I think about it the statement scares me (I have to be careful here... I really don't want to flame a friend... I really don't). He told me that the stuff coming in Whidbey is far more superior. Do I need to say more?
The Point
Folks, no matter where you fall on the futuritis discussion; please, please, please(!!) don't lose sight of what we are doing today; VS 2005 is coming in... well 2005... we're 7 months away from 2005. If you can help me do something better today... please let me know about it, now (and not say that well the next version fixes the problem)!
[PS. I'm getting out of the Futuritis discussion, so no more posts on it from me...]
