Why does it do this?!!?

I love VS 2005.  But does anyone else run into this.  You're working along and all of a sudden you think your box is frozen solid??? When you hit task manager, VS 2005 has locked and is grabbing 90% of the CPU and the devenv process is eating memory like there's no tomorrow (if you let it sit and wait it will eventually eat all memory on the meachine and crash the OS... at least I let it do this once).  It seems to be refactoring related.  I can see why some people say VS 2005 is buggy.  (BTW, this is a rare occurence for me).

I think I'm going to stick with only using the Refactor! Pro refactorings (for now).

I get it all the time when using Edit & Continue.  Buggy mcBugBug.  That said, I still prefer it to 2k3.

It happens to members of my team (and me) at least once a day.

Oh yeah - I've seen it regularly. Also seen issues of it just randomly crashing to desktop (usually after a build, but sometimes just opening or closing a file) with no error. And when you start it back up, it doesn't offer up it's autosaved files. Really annoying for those of use who don't save all that often (yeah, I know, I should be doing the Red-Green-Refactor bit, but I'm not quite there yet).

Anyways, it took me a while to track them down (though, once I did, I realized it was pretty obvious - but I don't use the default VS My Document folder), but the AutoSaves go to My Docs\VS2005\Backup Files if you ever need to manually recover them.

All in all, though, I'm sticking with it. The added refactorings, and .NET 2.0 enhancements more than make up for the occassional ARRGHHH moments.

MB,

I totally agree... I'm only making sure that I'm not losing my mind!

The thing is, how do you turn refactoring off?

I have it also when returning from a debug session and return to my windows forms designer. My cursus starts switching between two cursor-icons really fast and everything locks up.

It has something to do with the built in Refactoring... It's completely unusable.  Crashes, renames the wrong things, and takes 3 - 4 *MINUTES* to do a simple rename, and that's only when the system doesn't crash... Refactor Pro is much better.

Do you have DevExpress CodeRush and/or Refactor installed?  Uninstall and see if it goes away.  Did for me.  I have heard it is an issue with uninstalled assemblies in the GAC that cause hte issue but haven't yet gone back and tried to re-install it.
