  • It's pretty sad when...

you have to download code that you've written after telling the world that it is lame.  I'm referring to my very Lame XSLT Transformation utility for Visual Studio 2003 (I announced it here). Today, I needed to use it (I'm doing some XSLT debugging today and nothing that I currently have does the trick... I refuse to buy something for the 30 minutes that I'm going to need it).  Off to see how good my work is.

  • Survived another one...

So I know that some of you may be wondering if I'm alive or not.  Dunedin is on the other side of the state from where Jeanne hit (we're on the gulf side)... BUT the storm did come to my side of the state.  I had quite a bit of damage to my trees and fence (but nothing to my house as far as I can tell).  I lost a huge tree in my back yard which now covers my side yard.  Take the one picture I uploaded from after the Frances storm and realize that when I snapped it...

  • Reaction to Ken's latest post...

[read ken's post here] re-subscribed... As I just noted... My emotions sometimes take over... My original reaction had more to do with us not fighting over something stupid as what language should you prefer... I've been taught and always believe that you should “use the right tool for the right job“... in your world if C# is the right tool 100% of the time (when MS technology is chosen) then so be it... I can live with it being your preference.  We agree that we either 1) we disagree on this point... 2) I don't know enough about what you do to really...

  • Benevolent Ruler

So Chris Sells discovered here that his personally type (according to this survey) is a black night.  That's nice.  But I'd rather be a Benevolent Ruler!  The text is much more complimentary. our distinct personality, The Benevolent Ruler might be found in most of the thriving kingdoms of the time. You are the idealistic social dreamer. Your overriding goal is to solve the people problems of your world. You are a social reformer who wants everyone to be happy in a world that you can visualize. You are exceptionally perceptive about the woes and needs of humankind. You often have the understanding...

  • The XP SP2 feature we will all love and hate...

The #1 feature of XP SP2 that I desperately wanted was (you will probably laugh at me) was the pop up blocker.  I know that there have been numerous others who have offered this to us.  I just wanted something official (because some of the popup blockers I've used are quirky). I've been using SP2 since May (the release candidates), I think.  And life has been good... that is until Tuesday. You see in my day job I work on an Intranet site (that is accessible outside the firewall).  One of my testers noticed that SP2 had broken something in production.  We...

  • The NFL and Programming

[Bear with me there is a technology discussion going on here... not just a discussion of American Professional Football] So, the NFL is now 2 weeks into the regular season.  I'm a huge [American] Football fan!  I was reading some stuff up on nfl.com last night (while I was waiting for the debugger to deploy to the PocketPC Emulator... honestly, Dave that's my story... Sheesh, he's such a slave driver; you'd think his mortgage hinged on this... oh wait, it does).  I saw two articles talking about the fact that the last 2 weeks proved nothing.  The first week the Washington [deleted...

  • Best Practices: Always encrypt passwords

[First of all I want to apologize to those of you who are subscribed to my “Adventures in OOP” feed as this is not an OOP discussion, but I feel that this point is way too important that everyone must hear it... I was tempted to click every feed that I have because I think this is just THAT important]. I've working on something in my free time for someone else.  It's a PocketPC app that uses a web service to retrieve some data.  The web site behind the web service is a subscription-based service, so the user has to put in their...

  • Why do they taunt me....

I'm not sure if this is a vent or not.  SQLUnit just came out.  On the surface this looked cool.  I was all excited until I noticed that I needed to install java.  Java is installed, but I would prefer a .Net version (call me a MS bigot if you like... it's really my preference). So I decided to take shot at it with the lovely Java language conversion assistant.  I've tried this before with minimal to no success, but I thought I would go ahead and see what the result was (I know that there is no 100% solution here... I'm not that...

  • Dan Appleman blogs!

Ok, this may have been something I missed in the past, but I just discovered that Dan Appleman (one of my mentors... although I doubt he knows it) has started a blog (after repeatedly stating that he wasn't going to blog... thank you Scoble for convincing him!).  In case you don't know who he is, Dan is the author of the de facto book for Win32 API programming for old VB (prior to .Net).  Dan has also written a ton of other books and has his own company Desaware which produces a number of products including Spyworks (which lets you...

  • Free Tools I need to install...

I just installed a new hard drive in my laptop (it was much cheaper than buying a newer faster laptop).  I went from 6gb to a whopping 40gb drive (in my laptop... I have a lot more space on my desktop). Anyway, I need to get a list of apps that I need on my laptop to make it feel more comfortable.  I thought I would blog the list and maybe you'll discover something cool you didn't know about. 1) CodeSmith - was it all that long ago that I was trashing on this??  Wow!  I've gotten to a place where I...

  • Too funny...

I added a new feature to my site (so if you're reading this through an aggregator, you'll need to come see it here).  if you don't want to come see, I added the “Sesame Street Threat Level Indicator” to my news items (I saw this over on ArmySteve (Smith's) blog).  I hope the children's workshop let's it stay up...

  • When I meet Rory I'm going to give him a great big bear hug...

well I would if I wasn't afraid that his fear of germs wouldn't make go him catatonic, and that no one would be able to revive him.  As previously mention, I'm going to the Chris Sells XML DevCon which is my first conference in about 7 years (eek!  it's been that long??).  I am excited about meeting a bunch of bloggers (including Rory whose writing style stirred me to blog myself).  I've been reading people like Chris Sells & Don Box almost from the beginning of my blog.  It's like going to Microsoft blogger heaven.  I guess I should book my hotel (the fear of...

  • My love-hate relationship with javascript...

I'm about to reveal something about myself that I think many of us developer/web developer types have discovered.  I love and hate javascript.  When I build web apps I really love that javascript can make my interfaces a little more interesting as well as how it can take some of the validation burden off my server app.  When it works it works great! I have one aspect of javascript that has been the bane of my existence (believe it or not it's not cross-browser support).  The designers of javascript (in their infinite wisdom) did not include any kind of error handling...

  • Enough of this already...

I'm really starting to get sick of these hurricanes 4 in 1 month!  I'm preparing to board up and I may evacuate this time (I'm not in a flood zone, but I'm starting to wonder if we can continue being this lucky).  I'm leaving work a little early today, so hopefully I'll be able to get some supplies.  if we run I'm considering heading North (not sure where yet).  Maybe the panhandle of Florida or to Georgia (anyone in Atlanta or Tallahassee got room for 4?). I'm monitoring where they are expecting Ivan to go, and I'm planning on running in a...

  • Hurricane Frances update 9-8-04

Hurray, we have power!  I've created a gallery and uploaded a single image.  I have more pictures on my camera, when I have a chance I'll upload them.  Since I can never say something is good without complaining about something else (I think it's an upbringing thing... my parents are far worse than me), I still don't have cable yet, so no Internet at home (and therefore no phone... my wife wants to ditch Vonnage as a result). BTW, there are still people without power.  I work with a guy who hasn't had power since Saturday morning (when you have kids,...

  • Roughing it

As you may be aware, Hurricane Frances has smacked the crap out of Florida (much like Charley did, but Frances has affected more of the state).  Yesterday they were saying on the radio that it looked that at that point that Frances has hit 57 or the 67 counties in Florida (that was before it made landfall again in the pan handle). It didn't do a lot of damage in our area to any house (at least as far as I could see), but there are a lot fo trees down.  My back yard was littered with brances, etc.  If you...

  • Chris Sells Xml DevCon...

I'm going here.  I'll blog about the events.  I can't wait!  It's the first conference I've been to in about 7 or 8 years.  If you're going look me up.  I'm the fat guy with glasses (Oh wait... there's gonna be a bunch of others with that description).  I know I have a blond/white hair with a red/white goatee!  OK, I know that's not so helpful either. Look for this guy (DonXML).  I'll be introducing myself to him, so he might be able to point me out.  In all seriousness, I guess I might need to upload a pic of myself, since...

  • The point of XAML??

Ok, I'm trying to be one of the implied 20% that DonXML refers to his “80% of Windows Developers Will Not Understand XAML” blog entry. Now, before I comment I want to state that I really respect Don (I don't always agree with him.. I can think of some stuff on the Dot Net Rocks show that still plague me... he makes me think which is something I think most of us need to do more of), and if he says something I'm definitely listening.  Don beats the drum for declarative program; he says that we programmers need to try...
